Mookuthi Amman (2020 Film), A Review…

One of our most recent Tamil films to have gotten released on OTT and of course, my watchlist for Diwali 2020! Mookuthi Amman is a devotional-comedy film starring RJ Balaji and Nayanthara in lead roles. The movie came out yesterday (Nov 14) on Disney+Hotstar and here are my two cents!

Directed by RJ Balaji and N.J.Saravanan, RJ Balaji is supposed to have written the story with the theme of the Hindi film “PK” in mins: The god that created ys versus the god we have created! Outside of those two, the crew included R.K.Selva for Editing, Girishh G for Music, and stars like Urvashi, Moulee, Ajay Ghosh, Madhu Mailankody, Smruthi Venkat, Mayilsamy, and others in interesting characters.

Most of us in our 20s and up are used to the traditional Good (God) vs Evil films of the 90s! This film is similar in several instances but with just that little twist to make it pertinent to the current century and decade! Not going into too many details on the story, God (Mookothi Amman (Nayanthara)) appears in from out Engels Ramaswamy (Freelance Reporter(RJ Balaji)) and what follows after! We’ve got a runaway father, an aging mother, several unmarried sisters, and a grandfather along with our hero.

Maybe where the film could have had more focus is in the beginning when the film takes a little too much time to introduce the background and finally bring in the key character of Amman.

But you’ll probably not notice this too much. The film has two key wins. Urvasi and her usual stellar performance! And great comedy in all the right places! These two make sure that those little flaws in the film aren’t too noticeable.

Oh and if you don’t know already, there’s a political factor as well mixed into the plot. This might have been a little extra that could have been handled a little differently. The first half is well handled and makes you feel like the second half and the climax could have had a little more punch!

Subtly made out punches, hints to a real-life situation, relatability, and a stellar cast. Those are my favorites!

t’s not a standard devotional film! It is a comedy entertainer! And it’s a film you can definitely watch this weekend! I’d give it a 4/5!
